The First Appointment
The
first visit will last approximately one hour. Each new patient provides
the receptionist with their physician’s referral, fills out
any necessary paperwork, and then is brought into a private room
where a complete evaluation takes place. The physical therapist
discusses with each patient the nature of their injury or complaint
and the patient’s medical history. Then the therapist will
perform a physical examination, which will include range-of-motion
and flexibility measurements, strength measurements, gait analysis,
palpation and various special tests to confirm the diagnosis.
After the evaluation, the patient’s injury or condition
is explained in detail, and a treatment program is outlined. A home
exercise program customized for the patient and their particular
condition is also provided on the first visit.
After the initial appointment, each subsequent visit will last
approximately one to two hours, depending on the severity of the
injury. Most patients attend physical therapy two to three times
a week, and their treatment includes modalities (moist heat, ultrasound,
electrical stimulation, phonophoresis, iontophoresis, and ice),
range of motion/stretching, soft tissue mobilization/massage, exercises,
aerobic conditioning, balance activities, and patient education,
depending on each patient’s particular needs. Each patient
sees the same therapist each week, unless there is a conflict in
either the patient's or therapist’s schedule.
We believe that clear communication between the treating therapist
and the referring physician is vital for optimal patient care. We
keep in constant contact with the patient’s physician through
the use of evaluation summary letters, monthly progress reports,
and a discharge summary, and always contact the physicians directly
with any questions or concerns.
